The $3,500 WA rebate has closed, and there is no stamp duty or registration concession for electric cars. A road user charge was announced for 2027 but its status is unclear.
No state incentives for buying or registering an electric car were found for Western Australia. The federal incentives below still apply.
| Incentive | Details |
|---|---|
| Zero Emission Vehicle Rebate | $3,500 for new battery and hydrogen cars with a dutiable value up to $70,000, for the first 10,000 buyers when announced in 2022 and later expanded. It is listed as closed. One summary reports applications ended on 10 May 2025. About 12,456 rebates worth $43.6 million had been claimed by April 2025. |
| Charge Up EV Charging Grants | $15 million co-funding up to 50% of charger installation costs. Closed. |

| EV road user charge | The State Budget in May 2022 announced 2.5 cents per km for zero emission cars and 2 cents per km for hybrids, from 1 July 2027. One summary says it was legislated and then deferred. It is not in force, and the WA Government pages I opened did not confirm a start date. Treat it as uncertain. |
| Incentive | Who gets it | Details |
|---|---|---|
| Fringe benefits tax (FBT) exemption | Employees leasing a zero or low emission car through a novated lease, under the luxury car tax threshold | Makes novated leasing cheaper. The 2026 Federal Budget plans to reduce the full exemption over three years, so check what applies to your lease. |
| Higher luxury car tax threshold | Buyers of fuel-efficient cars, including electric cars | $91,387 in 2025-26, rising to $91,661 in 2026-27. Petrol and diesel cars face the tax above $80,567, rising to $80,809. |
| Customs duty removed | Battery electric, plug-in hybrid and hydrogen cars under the luxury car tax threshold | In place since July 2022. |
| DRIVEN Charger Rebate Scheme | Licensed motor dealers, service centres and repairers with qualified EV staff | Up to $2,500 per smart charger, capped at $20,000 per site. $40 million in total. Closes 5pm AEST on 30 April 2028. |
Planned: New luxury car tax category for zero emission cars. A $120,000 threshold from 1 July 2027, under the Australia-EU free trade agreement signed on 24 March 2026. It depends on legislation passing.
The WA calculator treats electric and petrol cars alike for stamp duty and charges the licence fee by weight. The comparison has a box to include a road user charge.
